Diablo 4's Splinter of Destruction is best understood as a progression choice, not just another combat effect. Tied to Baal, it supports players who want repeatable Undercity runs, Lair Boss farming, and steady War Plans reputation while still leaving room for Tree of Whispers objectives and targeted upgrades from Diablo 4 runes.

What Does the Splinter of Destruction Do in Diablo 4?

The Splinter of Destruction is Baal's Prime Evil Splinter from Season of Hell's Legacy. After you complete the seasonal questline and confront the required Prime Evil echoes, the available Splinters of Evil become part of your seasonal choices.

Only one Prime Evil Splinter can be carried at a time, so choosing Destruction gives your character a defined direction. While equipped, it periodically releases Baal's cold-based Iconic Power during combat, but the real value comes from the activities and reputation path tied to it.

How Do You Get the Splinter of Destruction?

Your first opportunity comes through the seasonal questline. Progress through the story, defeat the required encounters, and reach the point where the three Splinters of Evil are available for selection.

That means Destruction is not a random drop you need to chase from the start. The questline unlocks the decision, then your chosen Splinter shapes the activity loop that follows. Later, you can pursue another Splinter by completing the largest Waking Nightmares, giving you a way to change direction when your goals shift.

Is the Splinter of Destruction Good for Endgame Progression?

Destruction is a strong fit for players who want a repeatable endgame routine instead of jumping between unrelated activities. Its main focus is the Undercity and Lair Bosses, which pair naturally with character development, focused reward runs, and continued seasonal progression.

The Undercity gives you a reliable place to keep pushing through repeatable dungeon content. Lair Bosses provide a more focused target when you want to pursue specific rewards, while the connected War Plans track gives those activities a longer-term purpose.

This does not make Baal's path the automatic best choice for every build. A character centered on another endgame activity may get more value from a different Prime Evil Splinter. Destruction works best when your next several sessions already include Undercity clears and Lair Boss attempts.

How Do Waking Nightmares Affect Your Choice?

Waking Nightmares connect the seasonal story, the Prime Evil encounters, and the option to obtain another Splinter. The largest versions can be replayed after their introduction, and their higher Torment versions increase the danger while offering stronger reward potential.

That flexibility makes switching possible, but it should still be a deliberate decision. Keep Destruction equipped when Undercity progression and Lair Boss rewards are your priority. Change paths when your character needs a different activity focus, not simply because another power looks interesting for one session.

What Is the Downside of Using Baal's Splinter?

Baal's power comes with a clear trade-off. Carrying a Prime Evil Splinter increases your vulnerability to its associated Prime Evil, so Baal-focused Waking Nightmare encounters demand more careful positioning, stronger defenses, and better preparation.

The cold-based Iconic Power adds pressure during fights, but it does not remove the danger created by the Splinter itself. Treat the extra effect as support for your build, not a replacement for defensive planning or a reason to ignore encounter mechanics.

How Should You Use the Splinter of Destruction?

Start by finishing the seasonal questline and unlocking the available choices. Select Destruction when you want Undercity and Lair Bosses to form the center of your Diablo 4 routine, then use Tree of Whispers as supporting content that fits between those larger objectives.

Build War Plans reputation through the activities you already intend to run, and reassess only when your character's needs change. This keeps Baal's power focused, productive, and connected to your actual endgame schedule. From there, improve the build with targeted d4 gear, then return to the same loop with a clearer goal and stronger defenses.
